Tips to improve the quality of your delivery
Most people are camera-shy, especially when it comes to talking and/or showing their face. Worse if both at the same time.
And that’s totally fine!
There are 3 main types of behaviors we’ve noticed, and what to do if you feel like it’s affecting the quality of your delivery.
1️⃣ Fidgeting and repetitive motions
You fidget a lot when you talk and/or tend to have repetitive movements when anchoring a point (such as excessively pointing to the camera or nodding your head). Or maybe you just don’t know what to do with your hands!
Solution :
💡 Use a prop in your video, like holding a ‘mic’ or drawing on whiteboard.
💡 Walk around while speaking.
💡 Get creative with transitions, it can make your video more snappy and visually interesting.
2️⃣ The low energy
You may be high energy off camera, but it doesn’t translate on screen. You tense up and words tend to come out in a cautious or robotic manner.
Solution :
💡 Get someone to be your cheerleader behind the camera! Make sure they can loosen you up by making jokes and keeping the chit-chat going.
💡 If you prefer to work alone, prepare a rough script and say your lines with a few variations in tone and sentence structure until you find one that feels natural to you.
💡 Don’t try to record everything in one go. Instead record only 1 or 2 sentences each time and repeat until you’re happy with the outcome.
3️⃣ Deer in the headlights
Your mind becomes blank and you find yourself unable to articulate your words when you’re in the shooting range. You might even keep making mistakes and feel like giving up.
Solution :
💡 Get someone you’re comfortable with to facilitate a conversation offscreen, kind of like an interview. We find that some of our clients deliver better with an interview style versus a script style.
💡 Consider using script prompts, which is basically your script divided into small chunks. This is so you can focus on each part of your delivery without worrying about the next part and maintain your train of thought.
